Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) tendency of children perceived by mothers of elementary school children. Methods: Participants were 345 mothers with a child in third and fifth degree of one elementary school in G city. Data were collected from April 1 to April 15, 2011. The instruments used were Korean ADHD Rating Scale, Self-esteem Scale, Communication Scale, and Parenting Behaviors Scale for Mother. The data were analyzed using SPSS 19.0 computer program and included t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients, and Stepwise multiple regression. Results: Significant predictors on ADHD tendency of children perceived by mothers were rejection-nonintervention (©¬=.25, p<.001), male child (©¬=.25, p<.001), low (©¬=.27, p<.001), middle (©¬=.31, p<.001), high (©¬=.16, p=.006) of academic achievement, warmth-encouragement (©¬=-.13, p=.014), and overprotection-permission (©¬=.11, p=.020) of maternal parenting behaviors. These variables explained 29.0% of the variance in ADHD tendency of children perceived by mothers. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that improvement of warmth-encouragement and decreasing rejection-nonintervention and overprotection-permission in maternal parenting behaviors will be helpful to reduce ADHD tendency of children.
